My interests and hobbies throughout my life have remained stagnant but opinions I hold about topics related to them have not.
Some people may say I am “obsessed” with hair, and those people would be correct. From an early age hair was an important aspect of my life. It was tied to my identity, self-esteem, and weekly routine. Due to mainstream western beauty standards, I hated having my hair styled in braids as a child, but as I have gotten older my opinions have changed and so have the comments I’ve received. I realize now that past negative comments were mainly fuelled by a lack of knowledge and representation in mainstream media. Through engaging in opinion journalism, the story I write will be focusing on the misinformation, benefits, and reasons which encompass the topic of braids.
