From an early age hair was an important aspect of my life. It was tied to my identity, self-esteem, and weekly routine. Due to mainstream western beauty standards, I hated having my hair styled in braids as a child, but as I have gotten older my opinions have changed and so have the comments I\u2019ve received. I realize now that past negative comments were mainly fuelled by a lack of knowledge and representation in mainstream media.
